BASF challenges EU ban on fipronil pesticide

BASF, German chemicals group, affirmed intending launch a legal challenge against European Commission's ban of insecticide Fipronil (produced by BASF), which was imposed in July 2013. The European officers made that decision because of the concern for its use as seed treatment that is linked to the decrease in bee populations across Europe. The ban follows similar EU curbs imposed in April on Neonicotinoids, which are three of the world's most widely-used pesticides, known as, and reflects growing concern over a recent drop in the population of honeybees critical to crop pollination and honey production.
